DNA Testing Commercial Beef
Genomic testing helps commercial farmers apply targeted selection pressure to their female herd and increase their rate of genetic gain.
- Make more informed decisions about replacement heifers.
- Retain animals most suited to farm production goals.
- Know the herd’s genetic merit to target bull purchases.
- Identify animals that are genetically below the average.
- Sell surplus animals into selected markets earlier.
What are my DNA testing options?

Genomic evaluation for Commercial cattle
Igenity Beef
Contact us for more information
Igenity Beef is a genomics only tool that generates 1-10 scores for each animal across 17 key traits that are important for production and profitability.
Use the scores to evaluate maternal, growth, and carcass traits to focus time, feed, and resources on animals that will perform better in the farm system and increase genetic gains across the herd.
Suitable for straightbred or crossbred animals containing Angus, Simmental, Limousin, Charolais, and/or Hereford genetics.
-
Igenity Beef Report: This test provides scores for 17 traits and includes access to the ‘Encompass’ dashboard.
-
Igenity Beef + 100K Profile: This test includes all the above and parentage (provided sires/dams have been DNA profiled).
-
Genetic traits: Poll/Horn and Coat Colour are available as add-on tests with either of the above Igenity products.
GenSELECT
Contact us for more information
GenSELECT is range products that are specifically for commercial Hereford cattle and provide genomic prediction scores across a number of key production traits.
-
GenSELECT Heifer: takes the guesswork out of selecting your replacements heifers with genomic predictions for each animal across six (6) maternal traits, five (5) carcass traits and the Hereford Prime Index.
-
GenSELECT Profile: benchmarks your herd giving you a snapshot of your herd’s genetic merit to support strategic bull buying decisions. By sampling 30 females, an averaged set of GBVs is created for six (6) maternal traits, five (5) carcass traits and the Hereford Prime Index.
-
GenSELECT Steer: highlights which steers that have the genetic potential to perform in the paddock and deliver superior carcass results with genomic predictions for one (1) growth and five (5) carcass traits. Not suitable for bulls.
Standalone Genomic Profiles
For genomic profiles and parentage
Neogen GGP 100K SNP

-
Genomic Profile: 100K SNP Profile allows for add-on trait tests.
-
Parentage: Includes sire and dam verification (provided sires/dams have been DNA profiled).
Weatherbys VERSA 85K SNP
Contact us for pricing
-
Genomic Profile: 85K SNP Profile allows for add-on trait tests.
-
Parentage: Includes sire and dam verification (provided sires/dams have been DNA profiled).
Add-ons and Standalone Options
Tests can be added to a SNP profile using the same sample, or requested as standalone tests if a profile is not required.
-
BVD testing (BVDV-antigen ELISA)
This test identifies animals infected with BVD using TSU (ear notch) samples and is suitable for calves under 35-days of age. Available through Neogen and Weatherbys as an add-on to another test (using the same sample).
Also available as a standalone test (separate sample) through Weatherbys with a 3-4 day turnaround for results. -
LD Parentage | SeekSire
This test provides a low density DNA profile (~500 SNPs) for confirming parentage (provided sires/dams have been DNA profiled). Available through Neogen and Weatherbys.
-
Single trait tests
The following tests can be ordered on their own or as add-ons to a SNP profile for breeders who require status testing for just one trait or condition: Poll/Horn, Coat Dilutor (DL), or Coat Colour (Red/Black). Availability and pricing varies between Neogen and Weatherbys - please contact us for details.
-
Genetic conditions
A number of genetic conditions can be tested for if required; please contact us to discuss your needs.
Traits and Conditions Explained
Definitions of the relevant traits and conditions for commercial beef animals can be found below.
BVD - Bovine Viral Diarrhoea
Poll/Horn
Poll/horn testing identifies whether an animal carries the genetic variant for polled (hornless), scurred (small, loose horn-like growths) or horned traits. The polled allele (P) is dominant to the horned allele (H) which means only animals that are homozygous recessive (HH) will be horned. Animals that are homozygous dominant polled (PP) will only produce offspring that are polled; whereas animals that are heterozygous polled (PH) will appear polled (or scurred) but can produce horned offspring if mated to another heterozygous polled animal or a horned animal.
DNA SNP Profile
A DNA SNP profile analyses thousands of specific markers (SNPs) across an animal’s DNA to create a unique genetic fingerprint. This profile can be used to identify animals, verify parentage, and provide further genetic testing and genomic evaluations. A low-density profile provides a basic genetic fingerprint, while a higher density profile tests provides more markers for comprehensive genomic analysis and evaluations.
DL - Coat Dilutor
Coat dilution is a mutation in the PMEL17 gene which causes a moderate or incomplete dilution of red and black pigmentation based on its interaction with the MC1R coat colour gene. Dilution is a dominant trait. In Hereford cattle the gene causes dilution to black pigmentation leading to grey, smoky, or chocolate coat colours when carrier animals are crossed with black cattle (e.g. Friesian or Angus). Hereford cattle can carry the Dilutor mutation but will show no outward signs as they do not have any black pigment.
COAT - Coat Colour
The MC1R gene, also known as the Extension locus, controls the production of black (eumelanin) and red (phaeomelanin) pigments. There are three alleles (forms) of this gene:
Dominant black (ED) – this allele is dominant over both the other alleles so animals will have black coats if they have one ED copy.
Neutral Wild type (E+) – varied colours, but reddish brown if animal is E+/e
Recessive red (e) – all homozygous recessive animals will have red coats.
