DNA Testing

What tests do I need to register animals?

To be eligible for registration or transfer all bulls and females must meet the Society’s DNA testing requirements. This includes SNP DNA profiling, sire verification and testing for the relevant genetic conditions: Developmental Duplication (DD), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA).  For full testing requirements by animal type and age, refer to the Angus NZ Rules and Regulations.

To enable genomically enhanced EBVs to be calculated, animals must have a genomic profile with a sufficiently high SNP density such as the 75K or 85K products available through Neogen or Weatherbys.

What are my testing options?

A range of DNA tests are available to Angus breeders through our partnerships with Neogen and Weatherbys

  • Genomic Profile: 85K SNP Profile for evaluations. Allows for add on tests if required.

  • Parentage: Includes sire and dam verification.

Add-on and Standalone Options

Tests can be added to a SNP profile using the same sample, or requested as standalone tests if a profile is not required.

  • AM and CA Combined Test

This combined test provides an option for breeders who only require AM and CA status testing. Available through Neogen or Weatherbys.

  • DD, NH, and MAN Combined Test

This combined test provides an option for breeders who require DD, NH and MAN status testing. Only available through Neogen.

  • SeekSire Test

This test provides a low density DNA profile (~500 SNPs) for parentage only. Allows for add-on tests if required. Does not provide a genotype for evaluations. Only available through Neogen.

  • BVD testing (BVDV-antigen ELISA)

This test identifies animals infected with BVD using TSU (ear notch) samples and is suitable for calves under 35-days of age.  Available through Neogen and Weatherbys as an add-on to another test (using the same sample).

Also available as a standalone test (separate sample) through Weatherbys with a 3-4 day turnaround for results.

  • Single trait or condition tests

The following tests can be ordered on their own or as add-ons to a SNP profile for breeders who require status testing for just one trait or condition: Developmental Duplication (DD), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Alpha-Mannosidosis (MA), Arthrogryposis multiplex (AM), Contractual Arachnodactyly (CA), or Myostatin (nt821 variant).  Availability and pricing varies between Neogen and Weatherbys - please contact us for details.

Traits and Conditions Explained

Definitions of the relevant traits and conditions for Angus NZ animals can be found below.

AM - Arthrogryposis Multiplex

Arthrogryposis Multiplex (Curly Calf Syndrome) as an autosomal recessive condition where the spine and legs appear crooked or twisted and the joints of the legs are often fixed in position. Front legs are contracted and rear limbs may be contracted or extended. Calves are born dead or die shortly after birth.

CA - Contractural Arachnodactyly

Contractural Arachnodactyly (Fawn Calf Syndrome) is an autosomal recessive condition that reduces the range of angular movement in the upper limb joints. Calves present with an abnormal crouched posture, resembling a deer fawn. Calves are normally born alive and most can walk, suckle and survive.

BVD - Bovine Viral Diarrhoea

BVD is a virus that is widespread in New Zealand cattle and causes reproductive losses, weak calves, reduced growth rates, lowered milk production and increased susceptibility to other diseases. BVD spreads through close contact with infected cattle. Persistently infected (PI) animals in the herd present the highest risk as they shed large amounts of virus throughout their lives. BVD can also be introduced through purchased, leased, borrowed or returning stock.

MSTN - Myostatin

Myostatin (MSTN) is a hormone produced by muscle cells that inhibits muscle differentiation and growth. When the gene functions correctly, muscle growth is controlled, resulting in normal-sized animals. When mutations occur in the myostatin gene, muscle growth accelerates, leading to a condition called double muscling. While these mutations can enhance carcass traits, the nt821 gene deletion (M1) mutation in Angus cattle is also associated with increased calving difficulty.

DD - Developmental Duplication

Developmental Duplication is an autosomal recessive condition where calves can sometimes be born with an extra limb or part of an extra limb (known as polymelia). Not all affected animals (homozygous recessive) will show the condition due to incomplete gene penetrance so may appear normal.

NH - Neuropathic Hydrocephalus

Neuropathic Hydrocephalus is a lethal autosomal recessive condition where the bones of the skull are malformed and the bone plates are loosely organised. The cranial cavity is enlarged and filled with fluid with no recognizable brain tissue is evident. Early abortions may occur, but calves can be born near term and underweight.

MAN - Alpha mannosidosis
Alpha mannosidosis is a lethal autosomal recessive condition that affects animals prior to sexual maturity. Affected animals show severe, progressive neurological decline characterized by tremors’ of the head, loss of muscle coordination, and aggression when handled. Calves are born alive and may display no physical deformities but the disease will result in death.
